This is an alert from the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association. We know some of our clients buy chicken jerky treats for their dogs. The questionable ones are made in China. Please be wary.  Here's the notice.   Recently, several veterinarians in Ontario have reported cases of dogs that have been showing signs similar to Fanconi syndrome. All dogs in the reported cases had been fed chicken jerky treats that were manufactured in China.Signs of Fanconi syndrome can include decreased appetite, decreased activity, vomiting, and increased water consumption and/or increased urination. Blood tests may show increased urea nitrogen and creatinine.  Urine tests may indicate Fanconi syndrome (increased glucose). The problem is that this can be confused with diabetes.  If you suspect this condition, please have your pet examined.

Another successful animal sterilization clinic occurred on May 1. We sterilized 43 dogs and 19 cats. Thanks to all of our wonderful volunteers without whom we could not exist!. We are especially grateful for our animal collectors who faithfully round up animals in their neighborhoods and bring them to the clinic.

Our next clinic is May 29, 2011, It will be held at our office located next to Amigos de Boquete behind the Fundadores hotel. Please help your neighbors collect some animals for this event. Call Jessica for reservations at 6563-8686 or email her at boqueteanimales@gmail.com. We look forward to seeing you there with your animals or to volunteer. If you need brochures to explain the benefits of sterilization to anyone, please contact Ruby McKenzie valjala2@gmail.com or 6671-3021

Hope to see you at the GARLIC COOKOFF THIS SUNDAY at Las Ruinas from 12 to 5. All door proceeds will be donated to Amigos de los Animales. Come on out, taste all the wonderful garlic treats and support our animal sterilization clinics. See you there!

You asked for it and we are going to give it to you!

Amigos de los Animales will again have their annual Venta de Patio Sale. Please mark your calendars.

Start your rainy season clean out of closets and bodegas. Alicia McGuigan 6780-3565 will be picking up or you can deliver it to Carole Newsome at the TMM or to Bonnie Jach at Curvas in Alto Boquete. Remember, your castoffs can become someone else's treasures. We will have our infamous bake sale, plant sale, Bert's burgers and dogs, lots of food and of course, recycled goodies for every need. You know you hate those bulky TV's and old printers and leftover suede shoes.

WE WANT YOUR STUFF!!! Help us help the animals of Boquete and surrounding areas. Keep tuned for where and the time to shop.

Calling all members.... here's something really fun to do.. and a fundraiser for FADAB

Out and about with Dra Lourdes Quijada (from Newsroom Panama)

If you are an animal lover, a lover of choral music, or a combination of both, Sunday May 15 is a date you should circle on your calendar

Panama’s renowned Cantus Chorus is planning a “A Menagerie of Song”,  at St. Mary’s Hall at the St. Mary’s Church in Balboa to raise funds for Spay Panama, The performance starts at 3 p.m.

The cleverly conceived musical tour of the extensive menagerie will visit “all creatures great and  small”  from crickets to hippopotami and,  say the organizers there will be something for everyone to love. There will be music by composers from Mendelssohn to Lennon and McCartney and styles from Renaissance to traditional Venezuelan.

A personal request would be a childhood favorite: “The Teddy Bear’s Picnic”, and I hope the hippopotami are wallowing in “mud glorious mud.”

Proceeds from e concert will be used by Spay Panam to help with a dog and cat sterilization effort in the community of Chepo.  In addition, the animals will be vaccinated, dewormed, treated for fleas, injected with vitamins and have their ears cleaned.

Spay/Panamá is a nongovernmental, non-profit agency whose mission is to control the unnecessary misery and death of stray dogs and cats through an intensive sterilization program.  It is not a kennel – they only do sterilizations.

Spay/Panamá is able to offer sterilization services to pet owners with little means to afford the service and to rescued animals.  Together, they say we can make a difference. A good way to help would be attendance at the concert. Your $5 contribution will be  valued by the volunteers who perform the service.

For more information about Spay/Panamá and what they do you can visit their Website at www.spaypanama.org .
