Squeeks...she had great expectations, and was the queen of her castle.
May she have her dreams come true in the hereafter. January 4, 2012.

Shadow

Picture
August 25, 2011

Shadow was 13-1/2 years old when she quietly passed away.  She waited until the stormy day was over and chose a sunny day to leave the world.

Shadow had a hard start in life.   She was found on the street, taken to the Seattle shelter, adopted and then returned, because she couldn’t fit into her new family.  I was her second adopter and probably her last chance.  She was difficult and frightened and didn’t know how to interact with people.  But eventually, with the help of her adopted kitten, Mocha, she calmed down and became the loving girl we always knew she could be.

Shadow loved her people and was unusually empathic.  If anybody was upset, she would worry and meow and offer comfort.  She loved to carry on a conversation and would sometimes honor us with her presence on our laps.  She loved to help me change the sheets, an opportunity for playing hide and seek.

Shadow was the queen.  All the other cats deferred to her.  Her will to live was strong, but eventually, like all of us, she had to let go.  She was our gift, and we got to enjoy her for 12 years.

           BONITA

Picture
On April 10th my cherished feline friend, Bonita, passed away at home in Alto Boquete in the compassionate care of  veterinarian Dr. Robert Crespo.  Bonita grew suddenly ill two weeks prior and lost all interest in eating or drinking.  After consultations with three vets and impassioned efforts to nourish her, hydrate her, and reverse her physical  decline, a decision was reached to end the uncomfortable forced feeding and allow her to pass with her dignity intact.

Adopted in April of 2010 from Amigos de Animales, Bonita previously received care and touched the hearts of multiple loving humans.   Her life was short, but she undoubtedly lived it on her own terms and in the company of her chosen people.  Extremely bright and very independent, this endearing Calico enjoyed being out of doors during the day and sleeping in her own bed at night.  One could accurately set their clock by her arrival home each day at precisely 4:30 pm and her departure the next morning at 7:30 am.

Bonita was a champion communicator and persuasive self advocate.  She  was also loyal, and extremely intuitive.  With personality plus, she watched over house and yard.   She was a master at negotiating win-win situations, and could be very generous in her affections when positive outcomes were reached.  Her perky and intelligent presence is sorely missed.  Surely she’s earned our Creator’s favor, ---and is applying her craft amongst His angels.

My Last Day but I did not know it. You had to decide for me.

Wednesday, April 7, 2010. Pretty sleepy all the time. Glad I got this new bed a few months back...it even matched my colors. Carmen and mom wash it often. it is soft and comfortable.

Have been off my feed the last few days. Even before that just a few mouthfulls seemed to fill my tummy. Hard to believe I weighed 16 lbs a few months ago. Gosh it is getting to be quite an effort to get to the water bowl but I do drink a lot, so I pace myself and do ok.  I am proud that I can always make it to the litter box too. After 14 years of no mishaps (well, other than the log trip to Boquete, Panama by plane and car) I feel responsible for keeping that right.

Hello, she is coming in very early today. she has been with me more frequently I notice. Also, Dave comes in and speaks to me and strokes my head every day. The giant fluffy animals that live here too get shooed out when I come to sit and watch TV and snuggle on the couch. They just are not too sure of who or what I am and so mom and Dave decided to keep me safe and separate.

She is talking to me in that way she has, soothingly and softly. "Mocha, Mocha" she murmurs at me...and I find that today my "beeping sound" I always made back just takes too much energy.. but I rub my head against her hand like always. So she knows I am glad she is there. She picks me up carefully and curls me against her chest. Funny, even my purr is silenced now. Her face is wet. Gently she lays me back in my bed. I close my eyes and return to the very quiet state I have been in for many days.

Mmmmm, this is so nice. She has carried me through the house to their bedroom. I love to sleep on their bed when they let me go there some afternoons. Until lately, I could gracefully leap up on it, in that way we cats have. The past weeks, she needed to
help me.

This is different today. She has decided to come in and sit with me, talk about our life and adventures, quietly be in silence together, and give me very light touches. I think they know that my body is frail, and they handle me with care. Dave peeks in now and then. He also talks with me in his deep tone...always so nice to my ears. He holds mom's hand and touches her shoulder.  We stay like this for a long time.

Late in the day someone new comes in the room. He is carrying a yellow case. He seems kind as he reaches out to pet me. I do not know why he is here, but I trust my family. I know that whatever happens next will be done because they love me.

I have loved them, too.

         AMIGO

Picture
Amigo, as he was known at Montanas de Caldera, can vie with any as Best Dog Ever. He was actually owned by a finca nearby where he was known as Pinto. He was dearly loved by all.

He had the spirit and heart of a true champion. He shared love for the people and dogs around him. He brought joy, warmth and companionship. He was young and it is so sad that he isn't here to keep sharing his special gift of love.  He will be missed by everyone whose life he touched. One special dog!

I will miss Mi Amigo, as I have been feeding, brushing and trying to help him for the last 15 months.
     RIP dear little friend.

I will miss Pinto, mi amigo, as he touched my heart deeply.

              GWEN

Picture
Gwen came to Hacienda Arco Iris in Potrerillos Arriba at the age of three as her previous owner in David was only interested in a dog who would mate with other labs. and she was kept in a cage much of her young life. Gwen it seemed was only interested in freedom and a loving family.       When Maybeilis and family saw Gwen for the first time, it was mutual love at first sight.  They brought her home and Gwen had the freedom she so much enjoyed.  The funny thing about her was that whenever she was patted, she would always close her eyes!
Unfortunately Gwen passed away last month and will not be forgotten.   Gwen spent the last five years of her life with the best family she could ever have had and whom won over Gwen's unconditional love forever.

We rescued each other.  Even after more than six years, I still feel your soft nuzzle on my neck when I've been sitting at my computer for too long.  I will always miss you.  FH
